Seven special recognition plate designs, several with fee exemptions

California offers seven special recognition license plates honoring service members, veterans, retired service members and eligible family members. Each plate has its own eligibility and documentation rules. Plates named on the state page include Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, Gold Star Family, Legion of Valor, Former Prisoner of War and Pearl Harbor Survivor.

How to apply

Mail the completed Special Recognition License Plate Application, copies of your required documentation and any fees to California Department of Motor Vehicles, Special Processing Unit MS D238, P.O. Box 932345, Sacramento CA 94232-3450. For questions, call the DMV Customer Service Center at 800-777-0133.

What you'll need

The completed Special Recognition License Plate Application plus the proof of eligibility for the specific plate, which is usually your service record, orders, discharge papers or casualty documentation.
