California runs eight veterans homes offering affordable long-term care to aged and disabled veterans and their eligible spouses or domestic partners: Barstow, Chula Vista, Fresno, Lancaster, Redding, Ventura, West Los Angeles and Yountville. Across the system there are four levels of care, though not every home offers all of them: independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing care and memory care. Each home also has an outpatient clinic for comprehensive assessments and ongoing primary care. Medal of Honor recipients, former prisoners of war, wartime veterans, homeless veterans and veterans with a 70 percent or greater service-connected disability rating get priority for admission.
Apply online by registering on the CalVet registration page, or submit a hardcopy admission application. The Veterans Homes of California admissions page explains both routes, and each home has its own admissions phone number.
Your discharge paperwork showing an honorable or under honorable conditions discharge, proof you are a California resident, proof of your medical insurance coverage, and a joint application with the veteran plus your marriage or domestic partnership documentation if you are a spouse or partner.
