California State Employment Veterans' Preference in Promotional Examinations

Military experience counted toward promotional examination qualifications

If you are already a California state employee, you can count related military experience toward the qualifications required for a promotional examination. This is separate from the hiring preference, which only applies to open, non-promotional applications.

Contact your department’s examination or human resources unit when you apply for the promotional exam, and provide documentation of the military experience you want counted.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or service records showing the military experience related to the promotional classification.

  • You have military experience related to the qualifications required for the promotional examination
