California Veterans' Property Tax Exemption

Up to $4,000 of property value exempt from property tax

California exempts up to $4,000 of property value from property tax for eligible service members, veterans and their family members. You do not qualify if you own real or personal property worth more than $5,000 if you are single, or $10,000 if you are married. You must have lived in California on January 1 of the year you apply.

How to apply

File with the County Assessor where the property is located, not with the state, by February 15 each year. Claim forms come from your local County Assessor.

What you'll need

Your discharge paperwork or proof of current service, proof you lived in California on January 1 of the claim year, and a statement of the property you own.

Eligibility

  • You lived in California on January 1 of the year you apply
  • You are a currently serving service member, a veteran with an honorable discharge who served during a wartime period or in a campaign or expedition for which Congress authorized a campaign medal or who was discharged in peacetime for a service-connected disability, a reserve component member called to federal active duty, an unremarried surviving spouse of an eligible deceased veteran, or a parent of an eligible deceased veteran
  • You do not own real or personal property worth more than $5,000 if single or $10,000 if married
