Colorado Military and Veteran License Plates

40 plate designs, with 12 of them exempt from ownership tax and registration fees on one set

Colorado offers 40 distinctive licence plates for service members, veterans, retired service members and some family members. They fit passenger cars, trucks up to 16,000 pounds empty weight, noncommercial recreation vehicles, motor homes and motorcycles, and there is no limit on how many you can have. One set of each of these plates is exempt from ownership taxes and registration fees: Air Force Cross, Disabled Veteran, Disabled Woman Veteran, Distinguished Flying Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Former Prisoner of War, Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Navy Seabees, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Purple Heart and Silver Star.

How to apply

Apply at your nearest county motor vehicle office using Form DR 2002, the Military License Plate Application. Medal of Honor plates are the exception and must be requested by email, mail or in person with the Division of Motor Vehicles.

What you'll need

Form DR 2002 plus the proof of eligibility for the specific plate, usually your DD214, orders or VA certification. If you want the universal access symbol on the plate, add Form DR 2219, the Parking Privileges Application.

Eligibility

  • You are a Colorado vehicle owner
  • You qualify for one of the 40 military or veteran licence plates and can document it
  • Your vehicle is a passenger car, a truck of 16,000 pounds or less empty weight, a noncommercial recreation vehicle, a motor home or a motorcycle
