Connecticut Military Spouse Residency Relief Act Income Tax Exemption

Connecticut Department of Revenue Services
Connecticut wages exempt from Connecticut income tax

If you are a nonresident military spouse living in Connecticut because your spouse is stationed here under military orders, and you share your spouse’s state of residence, you owe no Connecticut income tax on the wages you earn in Connecticut. You still pay tax on those wages to your home state if that state requires it.

How to apply

There is nothing to file with Connecticut in advance. Give your Connecticut employer your residency information so Connecticut tax is not withheld, and file in your home state instead. If Connecticut tax was already withheld, file a Connecticut nonresident return to claim the refund.

What you'll need

Your spouse’s orders assigning them to Connecticut, your marriage certificate, and proof of your shared state of legal residence.

Eligibility

  • You are the spouse of a nonresident service member stationed in Connecticut under military orders
  • You have the same state of residence as the service member
  • You are not a Connecticut resident
  • You earned the wages in Connecticut
