Connecticut Property Tax Exemption for Veterans with a Total and Permanent Disability Rating

Local Connecticut municipal tax assessor
Complete exemption from local property tax on your home, or on one motor vehicle if you do not own a home

Every Connecticut municipality must give you a complete property tax exemption on your home if the VA rates you totally and permanently disabled from a service-connected condition. If you do not own a home, you get a complete property tax exemption on one motor vehicle instead. The law took effect on 1 October 2024 and will not show up until your 2026 tax bill. If you take this exemption you cannot also take the other veteran exemptions at the same time.

How to apply

Apply through the tax assessor in the municipality where you live, not the state. Connecticut property tax is run town by town, so ask your assessor for the local filing deadline and paperwork.

What you'll need

Your VA rating letter showing a total and permanent service-connected disability, your discharge paperwork, and proof that you own and live in the property or own the vehicle.

Eligibility

  • You are a Connecticut resident
  • You have a total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA
  • You own a home in Connecticut, or if you do not own a home you own one motor vehicle
