Reduced Connecticut Sales Tax on Vehicle Purchases by Nonresident Service Members

Sales tax reduced to 4.5 percent on a vehicle purchase or lease

If you are stationed in Connecticut on active duty but are not a Connecticut resident, you pay a reduced 4.5 percent sales tax rate when you buy or lease a motor vehicle. You can buy on your own or jointly with your spouse.

How to apply

Complete Connecticut Department of Revenue Services Form CERT-135 and give it to the Connecticut licensed dealer with any other paperwork they ask for, at the time of purchase.

What you'll need

A completed Form CERT-135, your military ID, and orders showing you are stationed in Connecticut and are not a Connecticut resident.

Eligibility

  • You are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You are not a Connecticut resident
  • You are stationed in Connecticut
  • You are buying or leasing the vehicle from a Connecticut licensed dealer, on your own or jointly with your spouse
