Temporary financial assistance for living costs, medical care and funeral expenses

A state fund run by the American Legion gives temporary financial help to eligible veterans and their families. It can cover weekly living needs, rent or mortgage interest, gas, electricity, water and heating fuel, medical expenses within limits, emergency dental care for the veteran, eye exams and glasses, hearing evaluations and hearing aids, funeral expenses and durable medical equipment.

How to apply

Contact a Designated Fund Representative or Veterans Aid Investigator in the community where you live; there is no central application office.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing an honorable discharge and at least 90 days of wartime active duty, proof you live in Connecticut, documentation of your financial need, and marriage or birth documentation if your request covers your spouse or children.

Eligibility

  • You are a Connecticut resident when you apply and while you receive assistance
  • You received an honorable discharge after at least 90 days of active duty during a statutory wartime period, or you were discharged earlier for a service-connected disability, or you served for the full duration of a conflict that lasted fewer than 90 days in a combat or combat-support role
  • You can demonstrate financial need
  • If your request includes your spouse you are living together, and if it includes children they are your natural or adopted children, under 18 and living with you
