Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery at Middletown

No-cost burial plot, grave opening and closing, government headstone and perpetual care

The Middletown State Veterans Cemetery gives veterans and their eligible family members a burial plot, opening and closing of the grave, a government headstone including its placement, and perpetual care, all free of charge. It handles full casket burials, burial of cremated remains and columbarium inurnment. Connecticut also has the Colonel Raymond F. Gates Memorial Cemetery in Rocky Hill, which is reserved for residents of a Connecticut veterans residential programme.

How to apply

Complete the burial pre-authorization form before there is a need and send it with a copy of your DD214 to Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs, Cemetery and Memorial Services, 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, CT 06067, fax 860-616-3561, or email oaa-cms.dva@ct.gov. For questions call 860-616-3688.

What you'll need

Your DD214 or discharge papers, proof of Connecticut residency at death or at entry into the service, and a marriage certificate or dependent documentation for family members.

Eligibility

  • You were a Connecticut resident at the time of death, or you were a Connecticut resident when you entered the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You were discharged from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, died while serving on active duty, served at least 20 years in the National Guard or Reserves and are eligible for military retired pay (or would have been except that death occurred before age 60), or were a reserve component member activated for federal service
  • Family members qualify through the veteran, with dependent children limited to unmarried children under 21, under 23 if a full-time student at an approved school, or a child who developed a lifelong disability before age 21
