Credit for Military Service in the Mississippi Public Employees’ Retirement System

Mississippi Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS)
Up to four years of service credit toward state retirement

You can add up to four years of military service credit to your Mississippi state retirement, sometimes free and sometimes by purchase, which can let you draw retirement pay earlier. Free credit is for service completed before you entered or re-entered state employment. Purchased credit is for military service that interrupted your public service, and requires the member and employer contributions to be paid.

How to apply

Contact the Mississippi Public Employees’ Retirement System at 800-444-7377 or 601-359-3589, or email customerservice@pers.ms.gov, and submit a copy of your DD214.

What you'll need

A copy of your DD214 or equivalent. For National Guard and Reserve service, PERS requires a DD214 for federal active duty and will not accept an NGB Form 22 or a Chronological Statement of Retirement Points.

Eligibility

  • You are a member of the Mississippi Public Employees’ Retirement System
  • You served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and received a discharge other than dishonorable
  • You can provide a DD214 or equivalent for that service
  • You do not already have credit for this military service in another retirement system administered by PERS, and it does not overlap other credited service
