Washington, D.C. Commercial Driver License Military Skills Test Waiver

CDL skills test waived

The District can waive the skills test part of the commercial driver license exam if you drive or recently drove heavy military vehicles. The written knowledge tests cannot be waived, and school bus and passenger endorsements cannot be carried over from a military license.

Complete the Washington, D.C. DMV Application for Military Skills Test Waiver and submit it when you apply for your CDL at a DMV service center.

What you'll need

Your current military license, and documentation that you are, or were within the last 90 days, employed in a military position that required you to operate a military motor vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle.

Eligibility

  • You are applying for a Washington, D.C. commercial driver license
  • You hold a current military license and are, or were within the last 90 days, employed in a military position that required you to operate a military motor vehicle equivalent to a commercial motor vehicle
  • You have held no more than one driver license, other than a military license, in the past two years
  • You have not had a driver license suspended, revoked or cancelled in the past two years
  • You have no convictions for the disqualifying offenses listed on the application, no more than one conviction for a serious traffic violation, and no record of a traffic accident in which you were at fault
