The District adds points to your numerical rating score when you apply for your first District government job. You get 5 points if you served on active duty, other than for training, for 180 days or more. You get 10 points if the VA rates your service-connected disability at 30 percent or more, or pays you a disability pension, compensation or retirement benefit. A spouse or domestic partner of a veteran who cannot take District government work because of a service-connected disability can claim it too, and an unremarried surviving spouse gets the same preference the veteran would have had.
Claim the preference when you apply for a District government position through the Washington, D.C. Department of Human Resources, and attach your supporting documents.
Your DD214, plus your VA rating or award letter, marriage certificate or casualty documentation depending on which preference you are claiming.
