Florida State Employment Veterans’ Preference

Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs (FDVA)
10, 15 or 20 points added to a passing examination score, and a guaranteed interview when no examination is used

Florida adds points to your passing score on a state employment examination. You get 20 points as an honorably discharged veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 30 percent or more who is eligible for or receiving VA compensation, disability retirement or a pension. You get 20 points as the spouse of a veteran or service member who cannot work because of a total and permanent service-connected disability, or who is a prisoner of war or missing in action. You get 15 points as the unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who died from a service-connected disability, and 15 points as the unremarried surviving spouse, mother, father or legal guardian of a service member who died in the line of duty under combat-related conditions. You get 15 points as an honorably discharged veteran who served at least one day of active duty during a wartime period established by Florida statute, and 10 points as a current member of a reserve component. Where no examination is given, preference applies at every step of hiring and any eligible applicant who meets the minimum requirements is guaranteed an interview.
