If you are charged with a crime in Florida, a veterans court can take your case and work on the underlying post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury or untreated substance abuse rather than just the offense. These courts coordinate with local, state and federal veterans agencies and community providers, and use volunteer veteran mentors to support you through the programme.
Ask your defense attorney or the clerk of the court where your case is filed whether your county has a veterans court and whether your case can be transferred to it.
Your DD214 or other proof of service, and documentation of any relevant diagnosis or treatment.
