Free New Jersey Vehicle Registration for Disabled or Blind Veterans

Vehicle registration fee waived in full

Your vehicle registration is free if you were blinded by wartime service, or if you have a service-connected disability and qualify for a specially adapted vehicle from the VA. Once the free registration status is set up, you can renew by mail or at any Motor Vehicle Commission agency.

How to apply

Call 609-292-6500 extension 5076 to request an application, then mail the certified application with a VA seal or stamp to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, Government Unit, P.O. Box 016, Trenton, NJ 08666-0016.

What you'll need

The application certified with a seal or stamp from the VA, your VA documentation of the disability or blindness, your New Jersey driver licence or generated driver licence number, and proof the vehicle is insured.

Eligibility

  • You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You are blind as a result of wartime service and eligible for the New Jersey Catastrophic Entitlement, or you have a service-connected disability and qualify for a specially adapted vehicle from the VA
  • If you qualify through the specially adapted vehicle path, you hold a valid New Jersey driver licence or generated driver licence number, your vehicle is fitted with the special attachments or devices needed for safe operation, and your vehicle is properly insured
