If a West Virginia National Guard member dies while serving on state active duty, or as a result of state active duty, the state pays their funeral and burial expenses. The surviving spouse and children also receive compensation from the state when the member dies from an injury or illness incurred on state active duty.

Contact the West Virginia National Guard and a West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance benefits office to file for funeral and burial expenses and survivor compensation.

What you'll need

The service member’s state active duty orders, the death certificate, a line of duty determination, funeral and burial invoices, and proof of your relationship to the service member.

Eligibility

  • You are the surviving spouse or child of a West Virginia National Guard service member
  • The service member died in the line of duty while serving on state active duty, or died as a result of state active duty
