Ad Valorem Tax Exemption on One Vehicle Owned by a Disabled Veteran

No ad valorem vehicle tax on one vehicle

If you are a disabled veteran, you can be exempt from annual ad valorem (value-based) vehicle tax on one vehicle you own. Unremarried surviving spouses and surviving minor children of a deceased veteran can also claim it.

How to apply

Apply through your county tax commissioner or tag office. You no longer need a Disabled Veteran license plate to qualify, so you can keep any Georgia plate you like.

What you'll need

Your DD214 and a VA letter confirming your 100 percent rating or the specific loss the exemption covers.

Eligibility

  • You received an honorable discharge
  • You have a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA, or are paid at the 100 percent rate for unemployability, or receive VA compensation for loss or loss of use of one or both feet or hands, loss of sight in one or both eyes, or permanent impairment of vision in both eyes
