Homestead Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans, Surviving Spouses and Minor Children

Local Georgia county tax officials (tax commissioner or assessor)
$126,526 of home value exempt from property tax for 2026

If you are a disabled veteran, Georgia exempts a large share of your home value from property tax. For 2026 the exempt amount is $126,526. Any value above that stays taxable. Unremarried surviving spouses and surviving minor children of a deceased veteran can claim the same exemption.

How to apply

Apply through your county tax commissioner or tax assessor, not the state. File the Georgia Application for Homestead Exemption with your county and ask them to confirm the filing deadline for your county.

What you'll need

Your DD214, a VA letter confirming your 100 percent rating or the specific loss the exemption covers, and proof that you own and live in the home.

Eligibility

  • You are a Georgia resident
  • You received an honorable discharge
  • You have a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA, or are paid at the 100 percent rate for unemployability, or receive VA compensation for loss or loss of use of one or both feet or hands, loss of sight in one or both eyes, or permanent impairment of vision in both eyes
