Hawaii Real Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans

Local Hawaii county real property assessment office (Honolulu, Hawaii, Kauai or Maui)
Real property tax exemption, at a rate set by each county

Every Hawaii county gives disabled veterans and their surviving spouse a break on real property tax. Hawaii has no statewide property tax exemption, so the amount, the disability requirement and the form all depend on which county your property is in: Honolulu, Hawaii, Kauai or Maui.

Check eligibility

How to apply

Apply through the real property assessment office in the county where the property is, not through the state. Ask that office for its exemption amount, its disability requirement and its filing deadline, since all three differ by county.

What you'll need

Your VA disability rating letter, proof that you own the property and live in it, and, if you are a surviving spouse, your marriage certificate and the veteran’s death certificate.

Eligibility

  • You own real property in Hawaii
  • You are a disabled veteran, or the unremarried surviving spouse of one
  • You meet the disability and eligibility requirements of the county where the property is located
