Idaho hiring officials must give preference to qualified veterans, spouses and surviving spouses for initial classified state positions, and again during a reduction in force or layoffs. Where scoring is used, five points are added for 180 days of active duty with an honorable discharge or for an unremarried surviving spouse, and ten points for a 10 percent or greater service-connected rating, a Purple Heart, an unremarried surviving spouse, or the spouse of a veteran who cannot qualify because of a service-connected disability. At 30 percent or greater you get ten points plus an interview if you are among the top 25 qualified applicants. Where no scoring system applies, a veteran is preferred over other applicants who are not more qualified.
Claim the preference when you apply for an Idaho state classified position and submit your service documentation. If you were discharged within the last 120 days, or hospitalized for up to a year, you may apply for a closed posting as long as a vacancy remains. Disabled veterans may apply at any time for classified positions that keep a register.
Your DD214 showing your service and discharge, your VA rating letter if you are claiming a disabled veteran preference, and a marriage certificate or death certificate if you are claiming as a spouse or surviving spouse.
