Idaho Retirement Benefits Deduction for Military Retired Pay

You can deduct military retired pay from your Idaho taxable income if you meet both an age or age-and-disability test and a qualifying-benefit test. For the 2024 tax year the deduction is $68,796 if you are married filing jointly and $45,864 if you file single, for both the 65-and-older and the 62-and-older-with-a-disability paths.

How to apply

There is nothing to file in advance. Claim the deduction on your Idaho income tax return, following the Idaho Individual Income Tax Instructions for the year you are filing.

What you'll need

Your Form 1099-R showing the retired pay, proof of your age, and if you are claiming on the 62-and-older path, your VA rating letter, disability pension award letter, or a physician certification of a permanent disability.

Eligibility

  • You are an Idaho resident filing an Idaho income tax return
  • You are 65 years old or older, or you are 62 years old or older and are a wartime veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 10 percent or more, a wartime veteran receiving a non-service-connected disability pension, recognized as disabled by the Social Security Administration, the Railroad Retirement Board or the Office of Management and Budget, or have a permanent disability certified by a physician with no expectation of improvement
  • You receive retirement benefits paid by the U.S. Government to a retired service member, or survivor benefits as the unremarried surviving spouse of a retired service member
