Illinois Deceased, Disabled, MIA or POW Veterans' Dependents Scholarship

Full tuition and mandatory fees for up to four years of enrollment

Illinois pays full tuition and mandatory fees at state supported colleges and universities for the dependents of certain veterans, for up to four years of enrollment including summer terms. The award runs on a point system: you get a maximum of 120 points, 1 point per credit hour up to 5 hours, 6 points for 6 to 8 hours, 9 points for 9 to 11 hours and 12 points for 12 or more hours. Points expire 12 years from the date you enroll.

What you'll need

The veteran’s discharge paperwork and VA rating or casualty documentation, proof of the veteran’s Illinois residency, and proof of your relationship to the veteran such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate.

Eligibility

  • You are the spouse, unremarried surviving spouse or child under age 26 of the veteran
  • The veteran was an Illinois resident when they entered active duty, within six months after entering active duty, or for at least 15 consecutive years after leaving active duty
  • The veteran was declared a prisoner of war or missing in action, has a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, is compensated at the 100 percent rate for individual unemployability, or died from a service-connected cause
  • You are enrolled at an Illinois state supported college or university
