Illinois waives the associate degree requirement for hiring as a municipal police officer or firefighter if you served honorably for 24 months on active duty or served 180 days in combat. It waives the bachelor’s degree requirement if you served honorably for 36 months on active duty or served 180 days in combat.

Apply to the municipal police or fire department and submit your DD214 showing the qualifying length of service or combat service.

Your DD214 showing your active duty time, any combat service, and an honorable discharge.

Eligibility

  • You are applying to be a municipal police officer or firefighter in Illinois
  • You served honorably for 24 months on active duty or 180 days in combat to waive an associate degree requirement, or 36 months on active duty or 180 days in combat to waive a bachelor’s degree requirement
