Illinois Driver’s License Extension for Service Members and their Families

Drive on an expired license for up to 120 days after returning to Illinois

If you are on active duty outside Illinois, you and your dependents can keep driving on an expired Illinois license for up to 120 days after you come back to the state. You have to carry a Military Deferral Certificate with the expired license. The certificate is free and is mailed to your out-of-state address.

How to apply

Send a copy of your current Illinois driver’s license, a copy of the front and back of your military ID card, and your out-of-state address to Secretary of State, License and Medical Review Unit, 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, IL 62723, or email militarydeferral@ilsos.gov. For questions, call 217-782-2720.

What you'll need

A copy of your current Illinois driver’s license, a copy of the front and back of your military ID card, and your out-of-state mailing address.

Eligibility

  • You hold an Illinois driver’s license
  • You are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces outside Illinois, or you are the dependent of a service member who is
  • You carry the Military Deferral Certificate with your expired license
