Illinois Global War on Terrorism Survivors Compensation

Illinois pays a $3,000 death benefit to the survivors of a service member killed in action by a terrorist act or hostile activities during a period when they were eligible for a campaign or service medal. The service member had to have been an Illinois resident for the year before entering the U.S. Armed Forces.

Complete the Illinois Global War on Terrorism Survivors Compensation online application. For help, call 217-782-6643, email Idva.Compensation@illinois.gov, or contact your nearest Illinois Veteran Service Office.

What you'll need

The report of casualty or death certificate, documentation that the death was from a terrorist act or hostile activities, proof of the service member’s Illinois residency, and proof of your relationship to them.

Eligibility

  • You are the survivor of a service member killed in action
  • The death was caused by a terrorist act or hostile activities during a period when the service member was eligible for a campaign or service medal
  • The service member was an Illinois resident for the year before entering the U.S. Armed Forces
