44 distinctive plate designs, several issued free of charge

Illinois offers 44 distinctive license plates honoring service members, veterans, retired service members and certain family members. Each plate has its own eligibility and documentation rules. Plates are only for Illinois residents and can only be requested at the Secretary of State office in Springfield, in person or by mail, at 501 S. 2nd Street, Howlett Building, Room 541, Springfield, IL 62756. After the first issue you can renew by mail or at any Illinois Secretary of State office.

Apply in person or by mail to the Secretary of State office in Springfield with the proof of eligibility that the specific plate requires. You cannot request a first issue at other Secretary of State offices.

What you'll need

The proof of eligibility for the plate you want, usually your DD214, a VA letter, or a verification letter from the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
