If you hold a municipal classified civil service position in Illinois, your active duty service earns you promotion preference points: seven-tenths of one point for every six months or part of six months served, up to 30 months of service. You can apply the points to one promotion only.
Claim the preference with your municipality’s civil service commission or human resources office when you apply for a promotion, and give them a certified copy of your DD214.
