Illinois Returning Veterans' Homestead Exemption

Local Illinois county assessor's office
$5,000 reduction in equalized assessed value for two tax years

Coming home from a deployment takes $5,000 off the equalized assessed value of your home. You get it for two consecutive tax years, the year you return from deployment and the year after.

How to apply

Apply through your local county assessor's office, not the state. Ask them to confirm the filing deadline for your county.

What you'll need

Your deployment orders and documentation of your return date, plus proof that you own the home and live in it.

Eligibility

  • You are an Illinois resident who owns and lives in the home
  • You served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces in an armed conflict
  • You returned from that deployment in the tax year you are claiming, or the year before
