Illinois adds points to your passing score when you apply for state employment. Three points go to veterans who served at least six months and were honorably discharged, who were discharged for hardship or released from active duty for a service-connected disability with an honorable discharge, or who served at least four years in the Illinois National Guard or the Reserves, including members still serving. Five points go to veterans who served during a time of hostilities with a foreign country for at least six months with an honorable discharge, who served for the duration of the hostilities no matter how long that was, or who served during hostilities and were discharged for hardship or released for a service-connected disability with an honorable discharge. Ten points go to veterans with a VA service-connected disability rating, Purple Heart recipients, unremarried surviving spouses of a service member or veteran who died from a service-connected cause or of a veteran whose service-connected disability keeps them from qualifying for civil service work, and the parent of an unmarried service member or veteran who suffered a service-connected death or such a disability.
