Illinois Veterans Care Health Insurance Program

Comprehensive health coverage for a $40 or $70 monthly premium

Uninsured low-income veterans who cannot get VA health care can buy comprehensive coverage through this state program for a monthly premium of $40 or $70 depending on income. It covers hospital care, doctor services, prescription drugs, clinic care, physical, occupational and speech therapy, laboratory tests and X-rays, alcohol and substance abuse services, medical equipment, supplies and appliances, emergency medical transportation, hospice care, home health care, renal dialysis, family planning, optometric care, podiatric care, limited dental care, chiropractic care, audiology services and mental health services.

How to apply

Download and complete the Illinois Veterans Care health insurance application, gather the documentation listed on it, and take it to your nearest Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs service office or mail it to Veterans Care, P.O. Box 19161, Springfield, IL 62794-9161. For questions, call 877-483-8779 in Illinois, or 877-204-1012 for TTY.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing a discharge that was not dishonorable and at least 180 consecutive days of active duty, proof of income, and documentation of your insurance history for the last six months.

Eligibility

  • You are aged 19 through 64
  • You have had no health insurance coverage for at least six months, or your coverage ended for one of the reasons the program allows
  • You are not eligible for VA health care
  • You are not eligible for another state health care program such as Illinois FamilyCare
  • You were not dishonorably discharged
  • You served 180 consecutive days on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, not counting training
  • Your income is at or below the Illinois Veterans Care income threshold for your county
