Illinois Vietnam Veteran Survivors Compensation

Illinois pays a $1,000 death benefit to the survivors of a Vietnam veteran whose death the VA determined to be service-connected. The veteran had to have lived in Illinois for the year immediately before entering the U.S. Armed Forces, received the Vietnam Service Medal or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Vietnam, and been honorably discharged from service between January 1, 1961 and March 28, 1973, or during Operation Frequent Wind on April 29 and 30, 1975.

Complete the Illinois Vietnam Veteran Survivors Compensation online application. For help, call 217-782-6643, email Idva.Compensation@illinois.gov, or contact your nearest Illinois Veteran Service Office.

What you'll need

The veteran’s death certificate, the VA determination that the death was service-connected, the discharge documents showing the qualifying medal and service dates, proof of the veteran’s Illinois residency, and proof of your relationship to them.

Eligibility

  • You are the survivor of a Vietnam veteran
  • The VA determined the veteran’s death was service-connected
  • The veteran lived in Illinois for the year immediately before entering the U.S. Armed Forces
  • The veteran received the Vietnam Service Medal or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Vietnam
  • The veteran was honorably discharged from service between January 1, 1961 and March 28, 1973, or on April 29 and 30, 1975 during Operation Frequent Wind
