Indiana Military Commercial Driver License Skills Test Waiver

CDL skills test waived

The Indiana BMV will waive the skills test for a commercial driver licence if you have military commercial driving training and experience on a vehicle similar to the class you are applying for. You still take the required written tests.

How to apply

Visit a BMV branch, pass the required written tests and get an Indiana Commercial Learner Permit, then submit the Application for Military CDL Skills Test Waiver by fax to 317-974-1615, at any BMV branch, or by mail to Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Attn: CDL Programs, 100 North Senate Avenue, IGCN Room N 481, Indianapolis IN 46204.

What you'll need

The waiver application signed by your commanding officer or a member of your chain of command verifying your military driving experience. If you are a veteran, add your DD214 and a letter from your former commander confirming at least one year of commercial motor vehicle experience before discharge. If you are still serving, add proof of current duty status and a copy of your military vehicle operator licence.

Eligibility

  • You hold an Indiana Commercial Learner Permit and pass all required written tests
  • You were regularly employed within the past year in a military position that required you to operate a commercial motor vehicle similar to the class you are applying for
  • You have held no more than one licence apart from a military licence for the past two years, and your licence has not been suspended, revoked or cancelled
  • You have had no convictions in the past two years for the disqualifying offences listed on the application, and no more than one conviction for the serious traffic violations listed on the application
  • You have had no conviction in the past two years for a traffic control violation arising from an accident, and no record of an accident in which you were at fault
