Indiana Service Member Registration and License Plate Renewal

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV)
Plate renewal by mail or online from out of state, with a military excise tax exemption affidavit

While you are stationed out of state you can keep your Indiana plates, register your vehicle where you are stationed, or renew your Indiana plates by mail or online through myBMV. The BMV can send your renewal notice and new plates to your home of record or to a friend or family member in Indiana to forward on to you.

How to apply

Renew by mail or online at myBMV, and record with the BMV the Indiana address you are using while you are out of state.

What you'll need

A copy of your Leave and Earnings Statement, a copy of your valid military ID or Common Access Card, and a completed Affidavit of Military Exemption from Excise Tax signed by your commanding officer.

Eligibility

  • You are an Indiana resident service member stationed outside Indiana
  • You keep an Indiana address on record with the BMV while you are out of state
  • You provide a Leave and Earnings Statement, a copy of your military ID, and an Affidavit of Military Exemption from Excise Tax signed by your commanding officer
