Indiana Vehicle Excise Tax Deduction for Disabled Veterans

Local Indiana county auditor, with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles
$2 of excise tax credit per $100 of unused property tax deduction, up to $70, on up to two vehicles

If you qualify for one of the Indiana disabled veteran property tax deductions but your property is assessed for less than the deduction is worth, you can put the unused part toward the excise tax on up to two vehicles. You get $2 of excise tax credit for every $100 of remaining deduction, up to $70. You cannot claim the vehicle credit and the property tax credit at the same time.

How to apply

Request an IDVA Certificate of Eligibility for Disabled Veteran Property Tax Deduction, then apply the unused deduction through your local county auditor and the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles when you register the vehicle.

What you'll need

Your IDVA certificate of eligibility, your VA disability rating letter, and documentation of how much of your property tax deduction is unused.

Eligibility

  • You qualify for one of the Indiana disabled veteran property tax deductions, or you are the eligible spouse of someone who does
  • The assessed value of your property is less than the deduction you qualify for, so part of the deduction is unused
  • You are not claiming the property tax credit and the vehicle excise tax credit at the same time
