Iowa Disabled Veteran’s Homestead Tax Credit

100 percent property tax credit on your homestead

Iowa gives a 100 percent property tax credit on the homestead of an eligible disabled veteran or their unremarried surviving spouse. The credit covers up to half an acre inside city limits, or up to 40 acres outside city limits, including the house and any outbuildings.

How to apply

File Iowa Tax Form 54-049 with your county or city tax assessor on or before 1 July, not with the state. Use the Iowa Assessor Directory to find the assessor for your property.

What you'll need

A VA Benefit Summary Letter showing your rating and a copy of your DD214. A surviving spouse also needs proof they receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation from the VA.

Eligibility

  • You own the property as your homestead on 1 July of the year you claim the credit
  • You declare Iowa residency for income tax purposes
  • You occupy the home for at least six months a year, or you do not occupy it because you are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or living in a nursing home
  • You have a 100 percent service-connected disability rating from the VA, you have a total and permanent disability rating based on individual unemployability that is paid at the 100 percent rate, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of such a veteran and receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation from the VA
