Iowa Private Employer Hiring and Promotion Preference for Veterans and Spouses

Employers may lawfully prefer veterans and eligible spouses in hiring and promotion

Iowa law lets private employers give veterans and eligible spouses a preference in hiring and promotion. No employer has to offer it, but one that chooses to is acting lawfully.

How to apply

There is nothing to file with the state. Ask an employer whether they use the veterans hiring and promotion preference, and offer your proof of eligibility.

What you'll need

Your DD214, or documentation of your spouse’s disability rating or death in service if you are claiming as a spouse.

Eligibility

  • You are applying to or working for an Iowa private employer that uses a veterans hiring and promotion preference
  • You served on active duty and received an honorable discharge, you served 90 or more days of federal active duty other than for training in the National Guard or Reserves, you served at least 20 years in the National Guard or Reserves, you are the spouse of a veteran with a compensable permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA or a military retirement board, or you are the surviving spouse of a service member who died on active duty during wartime or as a result of that service
