Iowa Veterans Cemetery

Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA)
No cost burial for veterans; $300 for an eligible family member

The state cemetery near Van Meter, about 10 miles west of Des Moines, offers in-ground burial of caskets and cremated remains and above-ground placement of cremated remains in a columbarium niche. A standard government upright granite headstone or niche marker is provided at no cost. Veterans are buried at no charge, and eligible family member burials cost $300. Iowa residency is not required.

How to apply

Complete the Veteran and Spouse Pre-Registration for Burial Determination application to establish eligibility before there is a need, and send it to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Drive, Adel, IA 50003-3300. What you'll need

Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork, and a marriage certificate or dependent documentation for family members.

Eligibility

  • You were discharged from active duty under conditions other than dishonorable, died while serving on active duty, served at least 20 years in the National Guard or Reserves and are eligible for military retired pay or would have been except that death came before age 60, or were a reserve component member activated for federal service
  • Your spouse and children qualify through you, with dependent children limited to unmarried children under 21, under 23 if they are full-time students at an approved educational institution, or a child who developed a lifelong disability before age 21
