Nursing and residential long-term care at the state veterans home

A state-run long-term care facility in Marshalltown provides several levels of care for honorably discharged veterans, their spouses, surviving spouses and Gold Star parents. Clinical services include pharmacy; physical, speech, occupational and respiratory therapy; laboratory work; X-ray; electrocardiogram; prosthetics including dentures; eyeglasses; hearing aids; immunizations; health care supplies; oxygen; and nutritional supplements. Non-clinical services include recreation, chaplain, nutrition and social work services, a resident work program, a library, transportation to outside medical appointments, banking and bill paying help, help applying for benefits, Wi-Fi, a gift shop, a barber and beauty shop, laundry and massage therapy.

Submit the admission application for your category, whether veteran, spouse or Gold Star parent, following the submission instructions on the form. What you'll need

Your DD214 or the veteran’s discharge paperwork, documentation of your need for nursing or residential care, and a marriage certificate or Gold Star parent documentation if you are applying as a family member.

Eligibility

  • You are an Iowa resident
  • You are an honorably discharged veteran, the spouse or surviving spouse of one, or the parent of a service member who died while serving on active duty during a time of military conflict or as a result of that service
  • You require nursing or residential care
  • If you are applying as a spouse you were married to the veteran for at least one year before the date of application, and if you are applying as a surviving spouse you were married for at least one year before the veteran’s death
