Kansas Homestead Refund for Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses

Property tax refund of up to $700

You can get back part of the property tax you paid on your Kansas home, up to $700. The refund is based on a share of the property tax paid on the home you live in.

How to apply

File online through the Kansas Department of Revenue WebFile service, or mail the paper Property Tax Relief Claim for Seniors and Disabled Veterans to the Kansas Department of Revenue. A KOVS veteran service representative can help you gather the VA letter first.

What you'll need

A VA Benefit Summary Letter showing a disability date before January 1 of the tax year, your DD214, proof you own and live in the home, your property tax receipts and your household income information. A surviving spouse also needs the death certificate and marriage certificate.

Eligibility

  • You are a Kansas resident
  • You own the home and live in it
  • You are an honorably discharged veteran with a 50 percent or more permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, the unremarried surviving spouse of such a veteran, or the unremarried surviving spouse of a service member who died in the line of duty
  • The appraised value of your home is no more than $350,000
  • Your total household income is no more than $56,450
  • If you are claiming as a disabled veteran or as that veteran's surviving spouse, you can provide a VA Benefit Summary Letter showing a disability date before January 1 of the tax year
