Kansas Income Tax Exemption for Military Retired Pay

Kansas Department of Revenue
Full exemption from Kansas income tax on military retired pay

Kansas does not tax military retired pay. If your retired pay is included in your federal adjusted gross income, you subtract it again on your Kansas return.

How to apply

There is nothing to apply for. Subtract your military retired pay from the income you report on your Kansas income tax return. If Kansas tax was withheld from it by mistake, file a return to claim the refund.

What you'll need

Your Form 1099-R showing the retired pay, kept with your tax records.

Eligibility

  • You are filing a Kansas income tax return
  • You receive military retired pay that is included in your federal adjusted gross income
