Kansas Sales Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans

No Kansas sales tax on up to $24,000 of purchases per year

Starting July 1, 2026, you pay no Kansas sales tax on up to $24,000 of purchases a year. Tobacco, electronic cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and motor vehicles are not covered. Your spouse or an authorized household member can make exempt purchases on your behalf, and an unremarried surviving spouse of a veteran who was receiving the exemption at the time of death can continue it.

How to apply

The exemption starts July 1, 2026. Contact the Kansas Department of Revenue or a KOVS veteran service representative for the claiming process, which the source does not describe.

What you'll need

Your DD214 showing an honorable discharge and your VA rating letter showing a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected rating or a determination of unemployability. A surviving spouse also needs the death certificate and marriage certificate.

Eligibility

  • You are an honorably discharged veteran with a 100 percent service-connected total and permanent disability rating from the VA or a determination of unemployability, or you are the unremarried surviving spouse of such a veteran who was receiving the exemption at the time of death
  • You are buying goods or services for the personal use of the eligible veteran, their spouse or their surviving spouse, and not to generate income
