Affordable assisted living, nursing and memory care at two state homes

Kansas runs two state homes providing affordable long term care for veterans and their spouses: the Kansas Veterans' Home at 1220 World War II Memorial Drive, Winfield, and the Kansas Soldiers' Home at 714 Sheridan, Fort Dodge. Each offers assisted living, nursing care and memory care for Alzheimer's and dementia, along with restorative care, physical and occupational therapy, laundry, recreation, dietary and social services, psychological services and transportation to local health care providers and the VA Medical Center in Wichita.

Complete the Kansas Veterans' Homes application for admission and work through the checklist that goes with it. Call the Kansas Veterans' Home at 620-221-9479 or the Kansas Soldiers' Home at 620-227-2121 for help.

What you'll need

The veteran's discharge paperwork showing a discharge other than dishonorable, medical documentation of the care you need, and a marriage certificate or relationship documentation for a spouse, surviving spouse or Gold Star parent.

Eligibility

  • You served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, received a discharge other than dishonorable and meet the VA definition of a veteran, or you are the spouse, surviving spouse or Gold Star parent of such a veteran
  • You require the level of care the home provides
  • You do not have a criminal history that includes a felony conviction or a guilty plea to a felony
  • The home has the resources to care for you
