Kansas Veterans Preference in Private Employment

Private employers in Kansas, authorized under state law
Employers may lawfully prefer veterans in initial hiring

Kansas law lets private employers adopt a veterans hiring preference. The policy has to be in writing and applied the same way in every initial hiring decision.

There is nothing to apply for with the state. Ask an employer whether they have a written veterans preference policy and provide your discharge paperwork if they do.

What you'll need

Official documentation that you received an honorable discharge, usually your DD214.

Eligibility

  • You received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces
  • You are applying to a Kansas private employer that has adopted a written veterans preference policy
