Kentucky income tax exemption on wages earned in Kentucky

If you are the spouse of an active duty service member stationed in Kentucky and you are not a Kentucky resident, the wages you earn in Kentucky can be exempt from Kentucky income tax. File a Form K-4 Kentucky Withholding Certificate with your employer so Kentucky tax is not withheld from your pay.

How to apply

Give a completed Form K-4 Kentucky Withholding Certificate to your employer to claim the withholding exemption. For help, call the Kentucky Department of Revenue Individual Taxpayer Assistance Section at 502-564-4581 or use the department’s online contact form.

What you'll need

A completed Form K-4, your service member’s military orders assigning them to Kentucky, and proof that you and the service member are residents of the same other state.

Eligibility

  • You are the spouse of an active duty service member
  • Your service member is in Kentucky in compliance with military orders
  • You are in Kentucky only to be with your service member
  • You are a resident of the same state as your service member
