As a state or local government employee in a Kentucky retirement pension program, you can buy service credit for the time you served in the U.S. Armed Forces, which for most members increases your pension. National Guard and Reserve time can be bought at one month of credit for every six months served. If you are a reserve component member who takes a leave of absence to serve on federal active duty during a national emergency, you may get that credit free. The cost to purchase is the higher of your current rate of pay, final rate of pay or final compensation, multiplied by an individual actuarial factor and the years you are buying.
Contact the Kentucky Public Pensions Authority to request a purchase estimate and start the paperwork.
Your DD214 or other discharge paperwork showing your service dates and an honorable discharge.
