You can be charged in-state tuition at a Louisiana public college or university even if you are not a Louisiana resident. It covers nonresident service members stationed in Louisiana and their dependents, a child or spouse who stays in Louisiana to finish school after the service member is reassigned out of the state, and students using VA education benefits or transferred VA education benefits who stay continuously enrolled and live in Louisiana.

Contact the admissions or registrar office at the Louisiana public college or university you plan to attend and ask them to classify you as a resident for tuition purposes.

What you'll need

Your military orders showing the Louisiana assignment or the reassignment out of state, proof of your dependent status, or your VA certificate of eligibility if you are using VA education benefits.

Eligibility

  • You are enrolling at a Louisiana public college or university
  • You are a nonresident service member on active duty stationed in Louisiana or the dependent of one, the child or spouse of a nonresident service member reassigned out of Louisiana who stays in Louisiana to continue your education, or a student using VA education benefits or transferred VA education benefits who stays continuously enrolled and living in Louisiana
