Maine Gold Star Family License Plate

Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services, with the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles
Exempt from regular registration fees

If you are an immediate family member of a service member who died in a combat theater of operations, you can get a Maine Gold Star Family license plate, which is exempt from regular registration fees. Eligible family includes the surviving spouse; parents, stepparents, adoptive parents and foster parents who stood in loco parentis; children, stepchildren and adopted children; siblings and half-siblings; and grandparents of those who died after March 28, 1973.

How to apply

Send the completed request form with your documentation to the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services, 117 State House Station, Augusta ME 04333-0117. Once they verify eligibility they forward certification to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, which mails the plates to you.

What you'll need

The completed request form, DD Form 1300 Report of Casualty, and proof of your relationship to the service member as listed on the application.

Eligibility

  • You are a Maine resident family member of a service member who died in a combat theater of operations
  • You received or are eligible to receive the Gold Star Lapel Button or the Next of Kin Lapel Button
