Maine Motor Vehicle Fee and Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans Who Lost the Use of Both Legs

Excise tax, sales tax, registration and title fees all waived on a vehicle under 26,000 pounds

If you are a Maine disabled veteran who lost both legs or the use of both legs, you pay no motor vehicle fees at all on a vehicle registered at less than 26,000 pounds. That covers excise tax, sales tax, registration fees and title fees.

How to apply

Apply at a Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch office when you claim your Maine Disabled Veteran license plates, and tell your municipal office about the excise tax exemption.

What you'll need

Your VA documentation of the disability rating and medical documentation of the loss or loss of use of both legs.

Eligibility

  • You are a Maine disabled veteran
  • You lost both legs or the use of both legs
  • Your vehicle has a registered weight of less than 26,000 pounds
