Maine Veterans Dependents Educational Benefits Program

100 percent waiver of tuition and all related fees, up to 120 credit hours

Maine waives 100 percent of tuition and all related fees for the spouse and dependent children of an eligible veteran at a University of Maine System institution, a Maine community college or the Maine Maritime Academy. The waiver covers 120 credit hours. A spouse can use it for a certificate, associate, bachelor’s or master’s programme and has 10 consecutive years from enrolment. A child can use it for a certificate, associate or bachelor’s programme, must enrol and be receiving benefits before turning 22, and also has 10 consecutive years from enrolment.

How to apply

Submit the online application through the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services.

What you'll need

The veteran’s discharge paperwork and VA rating or casualty documentation, proof that the veteran entered service from Maine or lived in Maine for the five years before your application, proof of your relationship to the veteran, and your school enrolment information.

Eligibility

  • You are the spouse or dependent child of the veteran
  • The veteran entered service from Maine, or lived in Maine for the five years immediately before your application
  • The veteran has a 100 percent total and permanent service-connected disability rating from the VA, was killed in action, died from a service-connected disability, died while a service-connected total and permanent disability existed, or was listed more than 90 days as missing in action or a prisoner of war
  • You are enrolled at a University of Maine System institution, a Maine community college or the Maine Maritime Academy
  • You maintain at least a 2.0 or C grade point average
